The Technique

What makes a deep plane facelift different

As the face ages, the skin is not the only thing that descends. The deeper layer of tissue (the SMAS, the muscle and connective layer that gives the face its structure) loosens and settles downward, taking the cheeks, jowls, and neck with it. A deep plane facelift addresses that deeper layer directly.

Rather than tightening the skin over loosened tissue, Dr. Hua works beneath the SMAS to release the retaining ligaments that anchor the face in place. Freed in this way, the deeper tissues can be lifted and repositioned as a single unit, restoring the cheeks and midface toward a more youthful position. The skin is then re-draped without tension.

A traditional SMAS facelift typically tightens the skin and the SMAS in separate steps, often relying on pull at the surface. That approach can produce a tighter, more swept-back look and may rely on skin tension to hold the result. By repositioning the deeper layer instead, the deep plane technique aims for a softer, more natural appearance that tends to hold its shape over time.

Results

Why patients choose the deep plane lift

01

Natural-Looking Results

By repositioning the deeper tissues rather than pulling the skin tight, the deep plane technique avoids a swept-back or overdone look and restores the face's natural contours.

02

Long-Lasting Refresh

Because the lift is supported by the underlying SMAS and muscle layer rather than the skin alone, results tend to hold their shape well over time.

03

Restored Midface Volume

Releasing the deeper attachments allows the cheek and midface tissues to be elevated back toward their original position, softening folds without added fillers.

04

Renewed Confidence

A rested, refreshed appearance that still looks like you can renew self-assurance in both personal and professional settings.

Candidacy

Are you a candidate for a deep plane facelift?

The best way to know is a private consultation. The points below describe many of the patients who benefit most from the deep plane approach.

  • You notice sagging or descent in the midface, cheeks, jowls, or neck
  • Deepening nasolabial folds or marionette lines have softened your facial contours
  • You want a natural result that repositions tissue rather than simply tightening skin
  • You are in good general health and a non-smoker (or willing to stop before surgery)
  • You have realistic expectations about what facial rejuvenation can achieve
  • Skin-only or non-surgical treatments are no longer giving you the result you want
